Abstract Aim Most hospitals mandate afterhours operations to permit only cases that are life or limb-threatening. This is in the interests of promoting patient safety and reducing surgical errors. The incidence caseload night-time has not been well defined Australia. study aims investigate characteristics emergency involving consultant general surgeons between 10pm 7am regional rural hospitals. Methods A multicentre, prospectively collected health service database all surgery performed over a 12-month period was reviewed. In particular, demographics, type operation, primary surgeon time operation were analysed. Results There total 2059 with 1344 hospital 715 within area network. Consultant involved 62 at night beyond 10.00pm, which majority laparotomies (n = 26/62, 42%), appendicectomies 21/62, 34%), hernia repair ((n 4/62, 6.5%). comparison, seven comprising 6 one abscess drainage. Conclusion Larger have higher volumes cases, increases likelihood operating. does other subspecialty cover competing for operating time. allows most be evening. order promote safe working hours improved safety, theatre availability staffing could increased evening diminish necessity midnight morning operations.
